The Story of BLOG

We are a Musical Theatre group based in Bath, UK. We produce a musical at the Theatre Royal, Bath and concerts/smaller musicals at the Roper Theatre every year!

The Beginning

The origins of Bath Light Operatic Group can be traced back to 1948, when the Oldfield Park Methodist Rangers Company presented a performance of HIAWATHA.  The following year the group performed HMS PINAFORE.

All Change

In April 1951 the Management Committee decided that male voices should be added for the first time and the company should be named the BATH YOUTH OPERATIC GROUP.  Their first performance was THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE.

There followed two more productions of THE MIKADO and PATIENCE before the first hesitant steps into a real theatre.  THE GONDOLIERS (1954) followed by THE QUAKER GIRL (1955) were staged at The Palace Theatre, Bath.

The Final Move

In 1956 BYOG presented its first show, THE GEISHA, at the Theatre Royal Bath.  We have continued to perform at the Theatre Royal Bath throughout the various physical changes it has undergone in the intervening years.

To Today

The group was renamed THE BATH LIGHT OPERATIC GROUP (or BLOG, for short) in 1961 to reflect the fact that there was no longer an upper age limit. The membership of the group has grown from 45 in 1952 to an average of 80 in recent years.

As far as productions are concerned, the Group endeavours to present as professional a performance as possible.  Over the years we have continued to be nominated for, and win, many Rose Bowl and NODA awards for our Productions!
